The New Yorker Encyclopedia of Cartoons: A Semi-serious A-to-Z Archive

Great cartoons that actually make you laugh out loud. I'll be looking back through this several more times. It's wonderful to see cartoons from some of the greats like Graham Wilson and Charles Addams. Whenever I saw a copy of the New Yorker the first thing I did was look at the cartoons.

I bought this as a gift for my husband who is a great fan of The New Yorker and its cartoons in particular. The books are beautifully bound and boxed. The paper is of high quality. The cartoons are classified by category, which makes it particularly fun if you want a laugh and any given topic. He is enjoying it thoroughly. Got it for $50 which was a great price!

Bought from SVNN Goodwill. Book was in perfect mint condition (including the plastic wrap and the promo flyer. Fantastic, large in size (2 huge tomes), excellent paper (joy to flip pages) … and The New Yorker cartoons, 3000 of them all personally selected by Mr. Mankoff! Trifecta!

The pro: you're not going to find a larger collection of New Yorker cartoons all in one place. This two-volume set is massive; I just about threw out my back lifting it out of the shipping box. Many hours of enjoyment within these pages. The con and it's a fairly minor one: I wish they hadn't chosen to arrange the cartoons according to subject matter. Somehow it isn't quite as much fun to peruse a hundred or so accounting jokes (or whatever) at a sitting. I would have preferred chronological order and a mish-mosh of subjects, just as they appeared in the pages of the magazine. The con certainly isn't a deal-breaker, though. I knew about the arrangement of cartoons before purchasing the se, and since I picked it up from Amazon for 33.00 the price was absolutely right. Enjoy!

So much to like about this. First of all, I find it very soothing to look at cartoons or comics when I'm trying to fall asleep, so I downloaded the Kindle version of this book. Some of the drawings are so good I enjoy looking at the backgrounds, thinking about how styles have changed (women still wore hats in 1967?), and seeing that life hasn't changed all that much in years, though the details evolve. The book isn't formatted to display cleanly on my iPhone, but that's not a huge problem. I'd prefer one cartoon per page because when they try to stuff two on a page the caption for the second often gets pushed onto the next page. Not the end of the world, but kind of sloppy. The narrative between sections is often funny and always informative. Makes me notice things I'd never see on my own. Highly recommended.

What is so striking about these book is that they are HEAVY. Really heavy. Literally. But the contents, and their themed delivery, are worth the weight.

The compilation of The New Yorker cartoons is wonderful and all subjects and themes are included. The seller was also great as I never received the original order although USPS confirmed delivery. It's a strange presentation, on a Kindle, but it works all right and it's cheaper. The cartoons are swell. They give you something to think about, and you see how some of the cartoonists change over their careers. Humor with Colbert and SNL, or standup on Netflix, is pretty different, so these cartoons can be a little oblique, at best. But the span of years is very long and there are some cultural insights along the way.

I like them because I got them when on sale. It is a no brainer to buy such nice books at this reasonable price.
