Revised Lapidary Handbook [Illustrated Edition]

Not sure what revisions were made but the book is very dated and was not very helpful. Mostly covers how to build equipment and older lapidary techniques of finishing. Does not cover modern finishing/polishing techniques most people starting with this hobby would need to know. For instance the author covers a section discussing using diamond paste as an alternative method for polishing but does not explain the process; however now days that is the normal process for finishing.The illustrations are very basic for machine construction and only provides an outline for construction. Construction methods are also out dated considering the building materials available for modern DYI. Pictures are black and white and not illustrative as to the process for lapidary work.Typically a revision to a book this old would encompass all the changes and improvement to the field of study that came along since the books last release. This revision does not do that. The material has not been updated and other than a new cover I'm not sure that the revision improved.Unfortunately there are few choices for good lapidary book. This is not one.

I can only give this a 4-star because I purchased it as a gift and not for myself. The recipient loves to do rock-hounding, tumbling and making cabochons. His reaction was that he loved it, and was looking forward to learning some new techniques. The historical aspects (oh, what did we do before all of our toys were readily available?) seemed to facinate him and he said that he was going to try replicating some of the "old time" tools.

Good information for the beginner, reference material for the experienced. The pictures are dated, but still useful. I would recommend this for the very beginner in Lapidary work
