Effective and sturdy bed rail
This product is easy to install and very sturdy. As I have PTSD and thrash around at night or try and sleep walk. The rail with the extra length is perfect. It prevents me from falling out of bed or it alerts me to sleep walking by hindering my progress to leave the bed. It stay in place very well as I have bounced off of it pretty hard a few times already and I weigh 233 lbs. You can extended or retract the extra rail easily with the small button on top. But as your motor skills are impaired while sleep walking I have found that I have not bypassed this simple but effective design. And making the bed and changing linen is no problem as its size in the non-extended position and way it fits against the mattress make it easy to work around.

Bought for safety
My elderly husband has fallen out of bed. This guard wasn't easy to install, but it works great.

Wonderful Product!
My mom fracture her hip few weeks ago due to falling from the bed while asleep. Once she was released from the hospital we had to look for a bed rail alternative to avoid this from happening again. I selected this product because of the great reviews and the alternative of being able to customize the size of the rail by just pulling it forward and/or backwards. My mom loves it! It was very easy to assemble in her bed and my handyman hubby did not complain about it....LOL!!! It is sturdy and even helps my mom when getting out of the bed as she grabs the handle, making it easier for her to stand up. I 100% recommend this product!

Secure feel, extend button difficult for arthritic fingers
Dad fell out of bed, says he was sleeping and didn't know what happened. So I bought this rail after getting the patient lift we had ( but never used) to get him off the floor at 4am. He isn't sleeping with it extended because his fingers are deformed from severe arthritis and the button is too difficult for him to push. I wish that they had a lever/tab on the button (like there is on his shower chair button) to provide an aid in pushing the button down so the rail can be extended. I was worried that he wouldn't have enough room to sit on the edge of his bed and still reach the items on his nightstand but he manages. Keep in mind the rail must be at least 12.5" from the headboard to keep the head from get entrapped which could cause a fatal hazard even if the person is not cognitively impared ..as my dad is not..he has mobility and no dementia..but I tried putting the rail closer than 12.5" to the headboard and sticking my head in between the gap and it didn't feel safe even for me. Keep in mind this is STANDARD practice for ANY bed rail and is not specific to this item in particular. I put the rail at the proper 12.5" + inches from the headboard and he was still satisfied about reaching his nightstand. I wish he would extend the rail but even with it un-extended he said he likes it, it is doing its job and he wish he would have gotten the rail sooner. I feel better too knowing at least he won't hit his head on his glass covered nightstand if he does roll out of bed again. Dad is 6'3" 230 lbs. Sturdy device.

Excellent bedrails
I bought two bed rails for my 92 yr old parents several months ago. They really like the bed rails because they feel safe in bed now and because they can lean on the bed rails to get in and out of bed which really helps them. They don't extend the rails because (1) they cannot fall out of bed with the rail in the non-extended position, (2) it requires too much strength to slide the rail in and out (WD40 is helpful) and (3) they need the open space to get in and out of bed. I also bought the canvas attachment for magazines, remotes, etc. It is OK but hard to attach because it is a very tight fit, the pockets are restricted, very tight. It does hold a Comcast remote. The mftr needs to make the canvas attachment a half inch larger so it fits easily and so pockets can hold larger items. I put a shoulder bag over one of the bedrails and that works well (see pic). Here's how one person can install the bedrails without removing the mattress. First read the instructions! Important info about where to position the bed rail to prevent injury. 1) Lay the bedrail on the floor by the bed 2) Put the strap through the bedrail 3) Get a yardstick, broom handle, PVC pipe or any long pole type object (a yardstick works best since it's flat) 4) Tape the end of the strap to the end of the yardstick 5) Lift up the corner of the mattress and push the yardstick as far as possible to the other side. 6) Walk to the other side of the bed, lift the corner of the mattress and pull the yardstick to you. 7) Secure the strap to the bed frame

Great product that fit our needs perfectly!
I am so very thankful to have found this Able Life Bedside Extend-a-Rail. I searched and researched and looked at so many different options for my grandma who is in her 90s before deciding on this item. She needed a little help to stabilize her when she got in and out of bed, and also to prevent roll-over falls, but we didn't want to get her a full hospital bed set up or the longer rails. We found that this item was well-priced, and easy to install (it is secured under the mattress so it isn't so intrusive on the bed for her), and it works perfectly for her! She is using it to lift up and down in her bed and at night it adds extra security from falling. One things we did is put a small rectangular pillow against it for added softness and it works great. I am very pleased that this type of item is available and would highly recommend it to anyone who has a similar situation to ours.

Be prepared to make a trip to the hardware store for the parts not in the box.
Part of the assembly is to attach the poles that slide under the mattress to the guard rail itself. You slide the two pieces together and place a bolt through the pre-drilled holes and screw on the nut. This is how the two main pieces go together, this is a vital part of the assembly. What do I get? A threaded bolt-great and an unthreaded bolt. You can't screw a nut on an unthreaded bolt. Without the nut, the bolt does not stay in place. So only half of the assembly could be completed and I had to make a run to the hardware store to get the missing threaded bolt. Maybe this sounds petty, but really? I paid $89 dollars for a rail, 2 poles, a strap and TWO threaded bolts. It' not like they had to keep track of a hundred parts that have to go in the box-they had to track 6 pieces. I'm giving it 3 stars only because the rail itself seems sturdy, I deducted 2 stars for the inconvenience of the trip to the hardware store and not being able to use it the night I got it.

Reliable and safe!!
I just bought this for my 85 year old dad because of the positive reviews it got. It took me hours to find the right product. He falls out of bed by rolling off in his sleep. I assembled and attached to bed last night. It was so easy. It is stable and will definitely prevent any future falls. My dad can adjust the length easily once he is in the bed! My dad even likes it, which is amazing. He wasn't afraid to go to sleep last night. He can get in and out of bed easily. I would recommend this product 100% to anyone who has struggles with this issue.

Sturdy, safe, exactly as promised
This was exactly as shown. Although the strap gave me some trouble as the instructions weren't clear enough for me, my mechanic husband figured it out and fixed it for me. I love that it will assist my sister when she's getting in and out of bed,but it will also protect her from falling out as her dementia worsens. Highly recommend
