Product description SMASHING PUMPKINS SIAMESE DREAM desertcart.co.uk An introductory drum roll drops out and is replaced by a single suspended electric guitar, which is then paralleled by a snare, filled in with the bass, and--crash!--"Cherub Rock", the opening track, is enveloped in an explosion of metal guitar. So the journey begins. This album is pre-experimentation vintage Pumpkins. Produced by Butch Vig (Garbage, Sonic Youth, Nirvana's Nevermind), Siamese Dream is first about guitars. Lots and lots of guitars. A very close second is Jimmy Chamberlain's unquestionably excellent power drumming. Throughout each song, Billy Corgan delivers angsty lyrics in his signature breathy whine. "Disarm" is a nice intermission halfway though the album. As the title of the song suggests, it throws the listener into a different mood with its full string arrangements and radiant orchestral chimes. But then it is back to the aural masochism--a pain that rarely sounds so sweet. --Beth Bessmer Review: One of the all time best Rock albums - Just a fantastic red vinyl variant of this Rock masterpiece. Completely disarmed
For the uninitiated, this is arguably the band's best album to date as well as one of the best albums in musical history. Not fact of course but it is arguable. There are no low points. Granted it does take a while to absorb and on first listen (hard to remember my first time as it was so long ago now) it doesn't particularly make much of an impression. Especially if you take, for example, the opener 'Cherub Rock'. It's a very lumpen, downtuned mediocre track on the first couple of listens. However, keep with it and it opens up to become one of the most inexplicably excellent songs you're ever likely to hear. 'Quiet' is more immediate and definite grunge single material. That said, it is a classic. And then the opening to 'Today' kicks in and you realise that what has come before, genius though it is, cannot compare. You suddenly cannot realise what is happening. Surely songs can't be THIS good?! 'Hummer' is a sleeper hit. After the 3rd or 4th spin it becomes classic material. One of my all-time favourite SP tracks. 'Rocket' is more of a companion track but it's still awesome. And the sublime 'Disarm' does just that. 'Soma' is like an epic battle from beginning to end. 'Geek USA' is a refreshing thrash. 'Mayonnaise' is purest genius (there's a lot of it about here), 'Spaceboy' is an exceptional ballad, 'Silverf@#k' is another nice thrash, 'Sweet sweet' is just that and 'Luna' takes us off tothe realms of uncertainty concerning whether we're going to hear anything quite as good ever again. It's pretty good.

Bought this on the strong recommendation of a friend
And I was not disappointed, I am a fan of the Smashing Pumpkins, although mainly of the Melancholy and The Infinite Sadness album (I know, some hardcore fans think this album from the peak of their popularity is popular with people who arent "real" fans, like people who started following Nirvana after Nevermind, I dont care, I just know what music I love). I give this album four rather than five stars as, while I love every single song on Melancholy, every single one, and find they are variegated enough while the entire album has a thematic harmony to it still, this album, for me, has two really outstanding songs (they really are outstanding), some of the others are not up to the same standard at all. They are fine but Today and Disarm are something else. Back when I was at technical college I remember people making mix tapes from their CDs that they could listen to in their walkman while commuting and they'd always include those two songs of this album, often with the entire line up of Melancholy. I do like the other songs, I listen to this CD in its entirety on a loop a lot in the car while driving but the two I mentioned are just greater than the others. They are also two songs I think its worth owning the album for and you could find that there are some others you dont mind listening too at the same time. If you like and know the style of the Smasthing Pumpkins from any other albums, EPs or singles you're not going to be disappointed (although you may own this already), if you are entirely new to the Smashing Pumpkins, it is not a bad place to start either (just be sure to check out Melancholy while you are at it). Recommended.

AWESOME!!
I love it so much. Bought it for myself as an early Christmas present. I really like The Smashing pumpkins and if you want a taste of their music, this album is the one to listen to. This is my 2nd smashing pumpkins cd, i recently bought ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ album and I recommend that too. :))

Epic
When Billy Corgan was at the top of his game, i.e. overdubbing 850 guitars into an assault to the ears of grinding, roaring, screaming guitars in an orgy of bombastic pseudo romanticised "grunge" wall of noise perfection. It sounded amazing on my cassette copy in 1993. Imagine how epic it sounds now on a good vinyl pressing through decent speakers.... ....and if only my hair could grow back...
