Great backpacking poncho
My girlfriend and I just used these for a four-day backpacking trip. We had 3 days with light to moderate rains and they worked great at keeping us dry. Very quick and easy to put on, a bit more difficult to take off as they do get hung up on the pack. No leaks. The bill keeps water from dripping in your face like cheap ponchos though you have to be careful no to crush it up when packing. Very light weight (12.5 oz with storage bag) yet completely waterproof and durable. Better ventilation than a rain jacket and more effective at keeping you and your pack dry. You can also use it for wind protection. Other people are group were quite impressed by them. My only suggestions for changes would be to make the armholes larger for better ventilation and adding snaps to allow them to be closed down. Putting an elastic strap at the end of the armhole to to wrap around your wrist or finger/thumb to keep the sleeve from riding up. I'd also make the sleeves about 4 inches longer so they can cover all the way to your hand even when stretching. I am 6' 3" tall so that last suggestion isn't for everybody. These changes would make it the perfect backpacking poncho.

Excellent poncho for various occasions
I wore this rain poncho in Spain on the Camino de Santiago. It was perfect for keeping my large hiking backpack and me dry. It has a number of features that I really enjoyed: It has actual sleeves so it's not open on the sides letting in rain on a windy day. I also like that the backpack part can be minimized for when I wasn't wearing my pack. Another huge plus was the drawstring around the face and the little optional loop between the legs making for a much drier walk on windy days (no open flapping in the wind parts unless you want/need that). I used this poncho a lot and liked it so much that I just ordered another one for another family member for another outdoor hike this summer. The versality and options to leave it open or closed tight make for a very nice lightweight poncho.

Easier, cooler than a rain jacket
So far I've only had a chance to walk around my yard in a downpour without a pack but I stayed nice and dry. I'm hoping to have a real test in the near future. The seams look good and the tape is applied evenly so I don't expect any leaks. Depending on how this one performs I'd like to get a pair for my kids (they walk home from school). I do like the loop/toggle on the bottom edge so you can sure the poncho bottom between your legs to keep it from flapping. I've got an old pair of Frog Toggs rain pants I may convert to chaps. The pair of these will make a nice cool weather rain gear ensemble. For the "not so good" I'd have to say I'm concerned about the back panel zipper arrangement. So far it didn't leak but without a pack the back panel kind of forms a pocket loosely covered with a storm flap. There's still a pretty big gap on one side. It looks like water can/will run down the back and into this pocket, creating a "bucket" dangling inside the poncho. There's a loop and toggle under the storm flap that I assume are there to help hold this material up to prevent this. They appear to only be marginally effective. I'm also not a fan of the visor. The foam gets mangled when you roll the poncho and stuff it back into the storage bag. It fits OK if you cinch down the face opening and adjust the hood. However, if you want to leave the opening loose for ventilation it doesn't fit well. A brimmed cap or other headgear is recommended for wear under the hood.

Great for scout backpacking
We banned cheap plastic ponchos on our boy scout backpacking trips because we had too many problems with them failing the first time they got snagged on a twig or pine needle. These ponchos were EXCELLENT. We literally deployed them for 18 scouts and leaders on a 5-day, 50 mile trip to the high Uintas (9000-13,000 feet elevation). The trip has affectionately been named "the rain camp" because it was wet every day. I like that these are nylon, go over the backpack or zip up for regular use, have arm sleeves, dry quickly, come with a storage stuff sack, and caribener. We also bought some Outdoor Products pack ponchos and not only are these cheaper, but they perform better. The Outdoor Products have a single snap to "close" the side and a flap that unfolds to make the back of the poncho longer so it works with a pack. These ponchos have enclosed sides and large arms and the flap for when you are wearing a backpack is more like an extendable pouch that you can deploy or conceal when needed. It is a much better design. I also like that these are still light and airy so you don't get sweaty. They block wind well and help retain some heat if you are sitting around in a squall. I like that they come in a bunch of colors. Anyway, we did a lot of research on these and were very happy. One small problem is if there is a 2 piece fishing pole lashed to the side of the pack. In that case it has to be removed and carried or kind of draped around it--but that is a problem with all ponchos I've tried.

Would be 5 stars with some simple redesigns.
Pros: being able to put it on with a backpack is amazing. Works well. Cons: The brim on the hat is absolutely terrible. It gets all bent out of shape and blocks your vision while you hike. Will end up cutting mine off and wearing a hat. The sleeves should be longer, bottom half of my forarms get soaked.

Excellent backpacking poncho
My son regularly goes on 10 to 70 mile hikes and loves this poncho. He is 6'2" tall and it comes to his knees while covering a full multi-day overnight pack. He likes that it is roomy and therefore has a lot of air circulation so that he doesn't get sweaty. He used it for 2 years before he tore a hole in it which is good considering that he is 16 and is rough on his hiking gear.

I love this poncho for my hiking adventures. This is the second one I bought just in case my first one gets damaged. Four of my hiking friends have also bought one for themselves.
