JavaScript & jQuery is also available as part of two hardcover and paperback sets depending on your web design and development needs: Web Design with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery Set Paperback: 9781118907443 Hardcover: 9781119038634 Front-End Back-End Development with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, and MySQL Set Paperback: 9781119813095 Hardcover: 9781119813088 Review: Inspiring, visual guide - This is a very readable book on JavaScript and jQuery largely because its focus is visual and because it has been expertly designed in terms of pictures, typography and layout. It's not dry like most other books on the subject, but colourful and inspiring, and written in plain minimalist language. It also uses good looking websites that you can download, complete with .css. These files are clean and uncluttered, containing just enough information to make them look great and allow you to try out the examples. If you're learning JavaScript, this is definitely a book I would recommend you to have in your library, especially for the section on jQuery which just makes it fun to learn. The colour pages have a quality feel to them. The only issue I had with this book was the binding. If you bust the spine, the pages will come out so look after it. I hope the author does a new version in years to come. Review: You MUST buy this book! - Why can't I give this more stars? Absolutely brilliant book. There's so much out there on the internet these days that there's little room for books, especially with front-end development. You have udemy courses, youtube videos and interactive tutorials, why bother with a book? I was thinking the same thing. I read a few reviews on this book and thought I'd give it the benefit of doubt. The book is beautifully designed. The content design is just excellent, I haven't seen a book like it. Jon Duckett smashes it out of the park, from vanilla Javascript to jQuery (which is a little out of date now, but still very very good). The book provides high-quality examples of working scripts with stunning designs. I love this book so much I bought the HTML and CSS book too. Very much looking forward to more from Jon Duckett. The book is as good as any online/interactive tutorial you will find on the internet. Can't recommend this book enough!

Highly Recommended
I have tried to learn Javascript and jQuery on a couple of occasions and I have never been entirely satisfied with my progress. This book is a revelation. The writing and the page style are just a delight. The stylish and colourful page layout makes the javascript code just jump out of the page at you. I have just finished the jQuery section (about halfway through the book) and I now feel very confident about it, both in using other (cleverer) people's plugins and developing my own scripts. The book covers the language and best practices and will be a useful reference as well as a tutorial for some time to come. There is more than this in this excellent book and I'm steadily working through the sections. I am confident with HTML, CSS, SASS and a couple of frameworks, and I do think you ought to be able to create a basic web page before attempting this book. I think this is one of my 'best buys' of the past few years.

Great content, poor binding (paperback version)
Brilliant book. Clear, logical approach. I love the way the layout of the pages has been designed, more like a webpage than a traditional textbook. This gives little bitesize nuggets of information to digest. At first I thought that maybe there was too much vacant space on the page, and I would rather have paid for fewer more information-dense pages, but as I went on and began to get a hold on the complexities I decided that actually the presentation is just fine. As someone who has done a fair amount of programming I found the book easy to follow, although the nature of the material means there is a fair amount of theory to take on board before you can do anything useful. For those starting programming there are some useful and well-illustrated pages explaining basic programming concepts. The accompanying website has the code snippets for download but if there is any additional content, I haven't found it. I would have liked to have seen more there - after all, its what the book is about - and I would still have splashed out for the paper copy. I hope Jon Duckett is planning more books. I'd buy one on Java. Only four stars because the binding of the book is desperately poor. After a week a chunk of pages started coming out. Returning to Amazon for a swap and I hope to be luckier with the next one. I wonder if the hardback version suffers from the same problem.

Well written, poor binding, got replacement from Wiley publishing.
Very well written book. Unfortunately let down by the binding. I'm barely half way through my first read, enjoying it too, but sadly the pages are falling apart. I am not a careless reader, but this is a big let down for me. Jon is very good at explaining concepts, with good examples for a beginner, and good illustrations too. The accompanying website is also good for reference. But the people doing the binding need to go back to the drawing board and improve their workmanship. They can do better than this. If I had known I would have probably tried the hardcover version in the first instance. The content is certainly worthwhile. Revised: After writing to Nick Mannion at Wiley Publishing last week I'm happy to say my copy was promptly replaced with a new hard cover copy. I can safely say the response has been five-star.

An excellent book that is different to all the others
An excellent book if you need to understand the detestablel language, Javascript. I've got several books on Javascript, and this one is very different to the others. It is over 600 pages long, but don't be put off by that. It is laid out spaciously to help get its points across. The layout and text and colours have all been given attention to help to aid the reader's comprehension. The author has obviously though carefully about the text in order to make a difficult subject as easy to understand as possible. This book will help you to understand Javascript. For practical applications the beginner could complement it with "Javascript in Easy Steps".

First 100 pages suggest this is exactly what i need.
I bought the hardback after reading negative reviews of the paperback binding. No worries as it was a minimal price difference. The book has a nice print finish and hasn't fallen apart on me! I had beginner experience of javascript, but wanted something to formalise my knowledge and explain APIs / JSON later in the book (yet to read that bit, but i can see its a chapter). I was able to make nice html & css pages, and then adapt them with jquery or javascript. However, i was mainly copying others code, getting a half-understanding of it, and adapting it ever so slightly for my needs. The book has really cemented a few things in my mind which is great and i think i will be much more confident by the end of it to build brand new things of my own. Having a book will also be useful for reference at a later date, rather than reading umpteen different web pages which 90% cover the same stuff a lot of the time.

Amazing product for starters (and more)
If you are thinking about diving into the web development world I would definitely recommend this product. 100%. Really easy to follow, lots of examples and additional info!! The book has the code colored as you would see it on any IDE, which is really useful. As per the content it covers a lot of the things you are going to use on an everyday basis if you decide to make a career out of this and even more useful stuff. If you are new to web development I would encourage you to purchase this book alongside the HTML & CSS book by the same author. Amazing combo and really useful!

Ideal for beginners, if not extensive
Summary first: This book presumes some knowledge of HTML & CSS (look up Duckett' preceding book if necessary), and introduces main elements of Javascript adequate for basic web-design projects, with no claims to comprehensiveness, and it's certainly a success in that respect. PRESENTATION: Impressive. Looks more like a Wired issue than your typical introductory programming/scripting book, as the latter usually try to fit as much information as possible into limited space, which makes pragmatic sense, but makes you not want to pick up the book and proceed. This book uses space liberally, sacrificing limited space (~600 pages + index) for readability ( devoting an entire page to the diagram of a for loop for instance), using very large fonts for summaries, etc. The design is elegant, and also well-thought: Different text colors, italics etc, are fully employed to make newly introduced syntax easier to comprehend. All code sinppets are included in blue boxes clearly separated from the text, where necessary, javascript and html codes are presented side-by-side. For every method / syntax introduced, browser compatibility is given in a table, and more compatible alternatives offered when necessry. SCOPE: As a corollary of the presentation approach, the scope is limited, albeit sensibly. The book aims to present JavaScript to the extent that it can be employed in basic web design, without trying to present the language in its entire functionality, as such important concepts/aspects are left out (Regular expressions, for instance). Also, HTML and CSS are NOT covered in the book(they're covered in Duckett's preceding book "HTML and CSS", prequel to this one), JQuery, Ajax & JSON are covered in a total of 150 pages, providing a decent, sensible introduction only. COMPARISON/SUGGESTIONS: If you want a more comprehensive guide at hand, consider getting Flanagan's "Javascript: The Definitive Guide", or an equivalent. If you want a more compelling and detailed approach to the language, supplement this book with "Eloquent Javascript", a book available, free of charge, online. ONLINE SUPPLEMENTATION: True to its claim, all code presented in the book are available online for bulk-download. Table of Content (CHAPTERS): 1 The ABC of Programming / 2 Basic JS Instructions / 3 Functions, Methods, Objects / 4 Decisions & Loops / 5 DOM / 6 Events / 7 JQuery / 8 Ajax & JSON / 9 APIs / 10 Error Handling & Debugging / 11 Content Panels / 12 Filtering, Searching & Sorting / 13 Form Enhancement & Validation / Index DURABILITY (WHENCE THE MISSING STAR DERIVES): I've read the entire book on the same bookholder & desk very gently, and still ended up with every page detached from the spine. (For comparison, other books I've read with the same method look almost unused). It's sad to see such a horrible spine/binding chosen for a book when so much care has obviously gone into its composition and design. Hope they revise the spine in future editions.

A great and convenient source to understand the scripting language of web. Readily understandable analogies, visualizations and examples. Accessing information happens in miliseconds in todays world but having a phsycial copy and being able to cross-read it feels both nostalgical and nice.

Great Buy! BUT. . .
The product itself is amazing. Well written, gorgeous design. It deserves a 5 star. HOWEVER, I'm quite disappointed that I received a paperback, despite paying for a Hardcover. Upon checking the posting, it says Hardcover is currently out of stock. So I am at a dilemma right now... I don't want to return this book because I need it now, but I wish I could get a refund for the extra cost I paid for the Hard Cover. I've been going around the links in Amazon, but couldn't find a way on how to get a refund for the extra cost I paid for the hard cover. Again, its not the author's fault, so I am keeping a 5-star rating for the product itself. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn JavaScript, just be careful not to buy an out-of-stock product, else you might get charged for a higher price. I hope Amazon or the seller would contact me about this.
