Are the thread "guides" wide/deep enough for embroidery thread?

Yes they are. I have used fine bead wire right up to wool thickness. Hope that helps

I'm a beginner, so i don't want to spend a fortune, but i want a loom that i can use to make dog collars, and not just for tiny dogs. will this work?

You could probably use this one for that although you would have to you would have to rotate your work around the ends where you tie them on, i would prob get the larger loom though as that way you donot need to move your work when started and you have plenty room to do the collars on it, the longer loom can be quite awkward to work with though as it is a good bit longer, hope this helps

how many beads wide is the working area

Think it's about 70, but never used the whole width. Not very impressed with it any way. The rods slip
