Rubbish product -broke after three uses. Stay away!!

Can anyone explain why these "double-hinged" waiter's friend are over-engineered with a seemingly superfluous 2nd hinge (vs a simple stepped bar)?

The second hinge is helpful if you get a particularly long cork, like some German wines from the Mosel Valley with long-necked bottles.
