These are wax earplugs, combined with a small amount of cotton batten to give them substance. The thing is though, that you have to twist them in half, and shape each half into a sort of cone shape then press the tip of the cone down and use that configuration to insert it into the ear. They are not one-use either, as they would have you believe - mine last me for some little time. (The drawback however, is that they work so well you can sleep right through the alarm...)
