Sequel to WOLVERINE. Review: The Hunted aren't always nice - This movie is trapped between a rock and a hard place in different ways. On one hand the public has come to expect a family friendly movie that their kids can enjoy without worry. On the other hand the source material is brutal. Our hero is essentially Freddy Kruger so to show Logan/Wolverine action scenes with the claws being implied is like watching a declawed cat trying its best on a scratching post. On top of that we have come to expect comic book heroes to save world or at the very least a city. We also expect them to be there for everyone else over themselves. We expect superheroes to be the moral pillars that society can look up to and attempt to emulate even if not all of them are as clean-cut as Captain America. Logan/Wolverine is an iconic superhero that fans of all ages want to see. Not only does Logan buck all of that, it stomps those expectations into the ground without an apology. The world doesn't need saving nor does a city. No one needs or wants our heroes. Our heroes, all of them, are in very bad situations. Rather than a macro focused comic book movie, this is a movie where our heroes are trying to save themselves. They have been living extremely rough lives in order to survive so they are very angry and rough around the edges. They are not pillars of morality or moral beacons of light. They are on the verge of being purged from humanity. They are not fighting for justice so when threatened they truly fight for their lives. There are no mind games or political power plays, it is brute force vs brute force. As with real-life heroes they are not perfect people. It's a constant struggle to stop acting like a wild animal backed into a corner but to be better. Though the movie is not what I would not think safe for child eyes, I will say that the movie also does a good job of handing off "morals to story" without slapping you in the face with them. By the other reviews here you can see many people zone in and focus on the violence and bad langauge. While some people will miss those values entirely or simply diminish the value of them because of the violence and language that accompanies those values it actually makes me respect the story and direction more. They didn't sacrifice their story to appease the masses. This movie is a lot more grounded than many movies without the science fiction elements. Character interaction for most of the film (not of all it) felt pretty geniune in the sense characters acted in a way I would expect people to respond in those situations. Not all of those responses are the "right response" but they are the response of someone with those interests in that situation would choose. Some of those responses will probably make more than a few parents feel queasy. There are plenty of kid friendly movies. What we do lack is movies like Logan. It brought a different take to the comic book movie scene. I felt it was a very refreshing take even if it was a dark movie. Maybe Hollywood will see movies like Logan and realize they don't need to try to appeal to everyone. You can have a target audience and still be successful. Not even comic book movies need to be kid friendly especially when the core fanbase are adults. Rated R movies in the '80s were still pretty tame. I think parents are learning that Rated R movies these days are not kid friendly. To be clear, I'm not suggesting all comic book movies be Rated R. I'm saying don't be scared to go that route if it makes sense in that situation. LOGAN NOIR First Blu-Ray extra I looked forward to seeing, mostly because they had a limited screening in theaters for a very short time that I missed. It is also the first Blu-Ray/DVD extra I actually enjoyed watching and thought was worth my time. I won't say you need to see the movie this way but you absolutely should watch it in B&W if you have the opportunity to. It fits the mood of the movie very well. In some ways I'm bummed this was a standalone movie in that universe but at the same time I could see some possible movies that could jump off from this storyline if they decided to keep this timeline and style direction going. I don't think I've written a movie review prior to this because I never saw the point but I absolutely wanted to support this movie and show my appreciation. I will probably write one for Wonder Woman as well as both movies are joining Guardians of Galaxy for my favorites right now. Review: The best action picture since "MAD MAX: FURY ROAD" and the best comic book film of all time - Where do I begin? What do you say I get this obvious detail out of the way: this is Hugh Jackmans' 9th time in person playing one of pop cultures' best loved icons, and from what I hear from the media, his final outing as the titular character. Also reprising his famous role for the 7th (and POSSIBLY final) time is Patrick Stewart as Prof. Charles Xavier, leader of the X-men and founder of the Xavier Academy for gifted youngsters. New to this installment of the "X-MEN" saga are Stephen Merchant as the albino mutant tracker Caliban, Richard E. Grant as Dr. Xander Rice, Boyd Holbrook as Donald Pierce and Dafne Keen as Laura. As for the movie itself, the action sequences alone are worth it. And why wouldn't they be? The vast majority of viewers and fans alike already know of Wolverines' six retractable 12 inch claws coated with Adamantium, his healing factor and his feral rage when it comes to dispatching his enemies. But don't worry. There's also an engaging, insightful storyline and well thought out character development to help balance the plot and spectacle. The story itself revolves around Logan struggling to eke out a living in a future where no mutants have been born for a very long time all the while taking care of an ailing Professor Xavier with the help of Caliban. But one day, Laura, a young girl with abilities like Logans' shows up on the run from Donald Pierce, leader of the Reavers, a gang of mercenaries working for Dr. Xander Rice, a scientist employed by Transgien Industries, the corporation responsible for creating mutants in this tale. What follows is a touching, edgy and violent look at what it means to have a cause worth fighting for and to be a family (albeit a disfunctional, blended one.) As a fan of Wolverine, "LOGAN" simply fails to disappoint me. I personally loved how Mr. Jackman and company completely upped the intensity of the action for an R rating. That means it is in no way family friendly (Parents of children who are fond of superheroes, take note). So, if you haven't seen it yet, please do yourself a favor and do so. Or if you have, how about a repeat viewing or two? "LOGAN" flat out proves that action films as well as comic book films do not need to be all style and no substance. As a cinematic achievement, "LOGAN" ranks as an action flick up there with "THE DARK KNIGHT" trilogy and "MAD MAX: FURY ROAD" and as a drama feature on the line of "THE GODFATHER" trilogy and "UNFORGIVEN". Sorry "SPIDER-MAN 2" you've just been dethroned by "LOGAN" as the best comic book film I have ever seen and the best Marvel outing of all time. One final thought I would like to share: I hope young Mrs. Keen has a long and successful career after her wonderful performance in "LOGAN".

An old man, a preteen girl, and action.
In many ways this is the wolvy film any old school wolvy fan has been waiting for. He uses his claws for the pure brutal function they are meant to be used for and its as satisfying to see as we have all been waiting for to see the ol canuck go to town shnickting the baddies who seem to all want to commit suicide by wolverine. The story seems to somewhat disconnect itself from the rest of the frankly terrible x men movies and even worse x men movies by fast forwarding to a possible end timeline. Is it the alternate born from the actions of days of the future past? Hard to say because there is virtually nothing beyond the presence of prof x and a few x men comic cameos to tie in the old days. X-23 a character originally created in the X Men evolution cartoon but grew so popular as to become recreated in the comics( the 2nd to have done so after Morph) is reimagined here but in ways more accurately then many other x men characters( see night crawler lacking his well known fine fuzzy blue velvet body fur he is famous for among his lovers in the comics) She is abit younger here but x-23 maybe even more fun to watch then her old man Logan( see what I did there fellow wolvy fans;)) In many ways this is some of the most true to wolvy we could really hope for. Logan has many times through the years in the comics semi adopted or mentored a young girl. Shadow Cat, Jubilee, X-23 just to name a few have been among his young women he trained to be empowered into some of the best and brightest of their era's The Reavers where a nice shout out as well to one of Logans 80s era group of foes, originally in the comics a group of men who survived logans rage during the events of the dark pheonix in the hell fire club when he fought through their horde of guards to save the rest of the X Men. Here used as a group of rather weak cyborgs that really mostly serve as meat for the adamantium blender. Apparently this is supposed to be the last time we shall see either Stuart as Prof X or Jackman as loga. Though leaked pics from Deadpool 2 seem to suggest we shall see jackman in there for at least a few scenes. I guess theya re trying to phase out stuart to make the younger prog take over more cleanly. Frankly not much of a fan of any of the x men flicks, the first class relaunch of the franchise failed so hard imo by once against not bothering to do the original 5 students and turn mystique into some kind of foster sister to Chuck left me shaking my head. Im still sad that due to the conflicting studios we never got to see Logan in WWII alongside Cap( well known to be where they first met in the comics and part of why they have a strange love/hate friendship in the comics is logan is one of his few WWII associates to be alive in his post thaw life. Nor have we ever had the chance to see wolvy vs hulk( wolvies first appearance was a fight with the hulk and the fact a hulk movie where he just kept fighting other super heroes like spidey, wolvy, and a few others has been sorely missed by marvel fans like myself though Thor 3 seems to be giving us some glance at Planet Hulks plotline for those wondering where the hell hulk was for Civil War. While the movie at times got abit slow for me over all Logan is easily the best of any of the x men verse movies they have done. Its sad to think it may be the first and last of this more mature Xcalibur( huh huh see what I did again;)?) Its the maturity, the chance to see live action with live action results of powers being used and mis used that made a series like Misfits way more appealing then Heroes a few years ago imo. If Iw ant PG quality I have plenty of cartoons and the comics after all.

Finaly a " Super Hero movie for adult's with substance & class!!!
First of all I admit I am no authority on Comic Book Lore or the history of the characters. I have been reading from a very early age I have read most all the classic's & all of Shakespeare's works...but my true love is the Sword & Sorcery genre. I enjoy escapist fantasy, adventure & science fiction which many of my literary friends deem unworthy to read let alone comic books! I often have to explain to them that genres like Science Fiction, Sword & Sorcery & even comic Books allow authors to address current affairs & powerful political figures that could get them killed if not " hidden" under the genre's of the unreal!!! This is much the same as William Shakespeare did retelling all the old tales the people of his day already knew in a new way. Shakespeare was telling the people of his time about the faults & debauchery of court royalty that if not hidden in these older stories would have gotten him beheaded!!! Watch some of these " Comic Book movies" & you will see what I am talking about. I have seen a few low ratings on this movie but that is because people have become conditioned to believe huge explosions & over the top special effects are what makes a good movie. Sadly to many people have forgotten to be stimulated cerebrally & entertainment that requires them to think is to boring to enjoy!!! " Logan" is a movie that has both a lot of action & a lot of emotional action going on throughout the whole film. When the physical action such as fight scene's stops the emotional action continues...basically the action is non stop there are just different types of action. This movie may just be to cerebral for many fans of the Comic book turned into movie genre, while other fans will feel it does great justice to these characters they have grown to love. While the movie " Logan" doesn't address controversial current affairs like some of "The Avenger" movies do it definitely humanizes these " Super Heroes" making them much more believable. The whole reason for giving this movie its R rating was not just to show more graphic violence but it was hoped that it would bring in adult's with a maturity level that would enjoy the gambit of human emotions the characters are going through in the film. Just like the arguments I have with my friends that are literary snob's who refuse to give Science Fiction or Comic Books a chance... I ask others to watch this movie again with " New Eye's" & give it a fair chance. There is a awful lot going on in this film that go's deeper than the surface, making it one of the greatest " Super Hero movies" ever made!

Logan (BD+DVD+DHD) [Blu-ray]
SPOILER ALERT - If you didn't see the movie yet, you may want to wait to read this. I enjoyed all of the X-MEN movies. Some of the fight scenes are way too long, but I still enjoy the movies. I'm including this comment in case it seems like I didn't enjoy Logan. I did. I really enjoyed watching it on the big screen in the theater, which is much bigger than our TV screen. The sound is much better there too compared to our little center sound bar and sub-woofer. Like all of the X-MEN movies, the special effects are fantastic! Soon after the movie started I was a little confused. When it ended I totally confused. I was talking to myself all the way to my car in the parking lot, which was about a ten minute walk. I did some internet searches and read up on the previous X-MEN movies and try to piece some things together. It didn't help. In the 2013 Wolverine movie, when Logan is fighting the Silver Samurai, he gets his adamantium claws cut off and the bad guy drains a bunch of his healing ability. Then he's back to only having his original bone claws. In the movie Logan, he has his adamantium claws back. How did that happen? In X-Men: The Last Stand, Jean Grey makes Professor Xavier... disappear. Then, I think it was after the credits, we hear Professor Xavier's voice. So, what, he just "popped" into another body? If that's the case, why can't he do that again in Logan. I repeat myself about this a few lines down. In Wolverine, when Logan returns home, time stands still in the airport, and he extends his bone claws. Then, in trot Magneto and Professor Xavier, both of them smiling like they're buddies again. Did the Professor forget what Magneto did in X-Men: The Last Stand? And Professor Xavier looks just like he did before he got disintegrated. How does that work? (Again, I repeat myself further down.) So here are some of the questions I have: Why is Logan dying from the adamantium in his body? How did he get his adamantium claws back? Why didn't Professor Xavier "pop" into another body when he first started getting sick? Logan was saving a bullet made from adamantium to kill himself. In the movie X-Men Origins: Major William Stryker shot Logan in the head with a bullet made out of adamantium and all it did was make him lose his memory. And if the "Evil" Logan...Wolverine...is a clone of Logan that they made in the lab, how can... it be killed by a regular shotgun slug, and in the end, the bullet made out of adamantium that Logan was saving for himself? I did like the story too. I didn't like the fact that they killed off both Professor Xavier and Wolverine.

Logan Is A Masterpiece
Never have I been happier to have been wrong. Logan is a masterpiece. Told in the fashion of a post apocalyptic western with more heart wrenching performances than one should be able to produce or endure, Logan is transcendent. Fox and James Mangold have produced a definitive finale, that as with Christian Bale's turn as the Dark Knight, should be deemed a legacy and never again touched. Now - on to my review. I went to see this final opus to long term legendary character, Wolverine, with lowered expectations. I expected it to be bleak, perhaps bordering on nihilistic. The notion that the template for the film was the Alan Ladd western classic “Shane” did not fill me with much hope. I came with lowered expectations after “The Wolverine” which still stands in my opinion as one of the worst superhero if not worst general movies of all time. That James Mangold who directed said film was heading this present run made me leery. Then something happened, the film titled simply “Logan” was something entirely different. In this case, different is good. Hugh Jackman pours his heart and soul playing a shadow of the man who was once such a force of nature. Patrick Stewart’s performance as Charles Xavier was incredibly moving and downright heart breaking. The find in this film, however, is newcomer Dafne Keen as Laura/X-23. In her first big screen outing this young woman’s performance is so damn incredible that words simply fail. She is essentially presented as a feral child. She has to convey such a variety of emotions with nearly no dialogue. The range she demonstrates is fantastic and Ms. Keen’s future as an actress at her 11 years of age is filled with promise. Her physicality, raw hurt and soul shattering rage are mitigated by a subtle compassion and heart of a protector. She seamlessly covers Xavier when they are attacked by a group known as “The Reavers”. Her propensity for violence leaves no question as to her parentage. Xavier smilingly remarks “does she remind you of anyone Logan?” His later comparing her to a lioness complementing her variant of Logan’s enhancements with her equal alacrity at defense is apt. This is an R rated film. It is a hard R. The violence in this venture is breath taking. Both Logan and Laura are warriors and the exhibiting of each mutant’s ferocity is something to behold. This is not standard Marvel fare and it did not purport to be. It needed to be an R rated film. Set in 2029 after the essential decline and imminent potential extinction of mutants, this is not a fun romp. It is definitively a dark turn. It is so much more though. “Logan” has grit, touches of humor and above all flourishes of what it is to be human. The notion of being a parent and all that comes with such a responsibility is aptly illustrated via the father son dynamic of Charles and Logan. The desire for a parent via Laura is so painful to watch but you simply can’t look away. There is a later scene in the film where Laura acknowledges Logan as her father that is soul crushingly beautiful. Make no mistake, this is not the Wolverine of X-Men films past that some have grown up with. Logan is older, more down trodden. Two incidents inform his present state, the more traumatic of the two being the “Westchester incident” which indelibly links Xavier and Logan to the end. Some have criticized this segment not being presented in flashbacks, but there is no need. We can deduce what happened and this is horrible enough. Xavier’s later confession of remembering 'what happened' when he cites having had a “better day than he deserves” is a harsh enough reveal. The film starts off as nigh apocalyptic with its dusty, subdued tones and desert locales. The place beyond the Mexican border where Logan ‘houses’ Xavier is bleak as hell. Stephen Merchant’s Caliban is his part time caretaker. Like Logan, he too has committed acts for which he must atone. The sight of Xavier in failing mental health and decline was something I thought I could not get past. One does however as he manages to. His resurgence into the real world as he finds a cause worth living for is exceptional performance on Stewart’s part though we should expect no less. Merchant’s role is well played with the actor known for predominantly comedic fare presenting a resonant, rich character one can easily feel empathy toward. Boyd Holdbrook’s “Donald Pierce” is a stylish villain. He presents his character with an arrogant tone of menace belying a sly charm. He makes the role his own playing an unapologetic bastard who has the hubris to refer to himself as “one of the good guys”. The low key effects of his and his Reaver cohorts’ cybernetic enhancements were well done. This is a grounded movie and there is no need for heavy CGI or visuals. In that same vein, the illustration of Xavier’s “weapon of mass destruction” mind as he has physical incidents/seizures was astounding. The scene in which he attempts to protect Laura and instead basically “EMPs” an entire casino was a terrific sequence up to and including Logan attempting to reach him to help. Richard E. Grant’s “Dr. Zander Rice” is a cruel extension of the man who both gifted and cursed Logan with his adamantium skeleton. His performance is nothing new but Logan’s dealing with him was unexpected and played exceedingly well. The notion of Logan and Xavier’s past informing their present is presented with a physical manifestation or personification of fate’s retribution via X-24. I’ll say no more on that subject. Hugh Jackman proclaims he is done with this character and I believe him. My sincerest best wishes to whoever attempts to pick up the mantle of Wolverine. Their work is very much cut out for them. Hugh Jackman is Logan/Wolverine and this final film is a firm punctuation of the fact. I could continue to expound on the many successes and accomplishments of this character swan song. I’ll wrap it up by saying Logan is easily one Marvel’s best forays and despite a profound harshness still hearkens to a hopeful direction for future endeavors. Simply put, you must see this movie if you are a fan of the genre or if you simply want to see an incredible film. Logan is irrefutably, simply outstanding and well worth your time.
