Will it return the ball ?

I don’t believe it’s an advertised feature, but I have found the ball does return a majority of the time. Golf balls more often than others.

What is the size of the depth dimention? How much space behind the net is required?

Very little, the net absorbs the ball's impact. When the ball hits the net, it extends about 2 feet behind the net.

How would it be for indoor use without anchoring the base?

The net is large and relatively heavy. I think it would just fall. Another problem, it has a lot of give. I use it for outdoor practice with ice hockey pucks. I have to buy another net to put in between this net and window. Otherwise the puck will not break the net but will fly about 1.5 yard pass the net. Thus, indoor, make sure you have enough space between the net and what you want to protect. Hope it makes sense :)

How small are the holes in the netting?

they are very small, i use it to hit golf balls in it. as of yet none have come through it yet.
