Amazing author

Melissa, girl, sis. I loved the Pisces and So Sad Today. You immediately became my favorite writer. This book of poetry though, isn’t a reflection of how capable you are as a writer. I did not enjoy this work at all. I didn’t know what the hell I was looking for between the lines. It felt like I was reading unrelated dreams that you mashed together in an attempt to make sense of their meaning but could not. But I do appreciate that it isn’t a collection of fake deep self help statements like most contemporary poems on instagram. Youre still my fav. I’m still going to read all of your other stuff. Youve enriched my life for the most part.

My 17 yr old daughter was disappointed with this book, she prefers Melissa Broder' s other books to this one. As a parent, I was saddened by what our society now considers " brilliant". Do hard drugs, write while you are high, and become famous. What happens afterwards? Smh

I first became a fan of the author through her Twitter account @sosadtoday and delved into the personal essay collection of the same name. I found her stand alone tweets to be superior to the essays so I thought that I wanted to dive into her poems which is where Broder excels. While I really liked some of these poems (and I'm not a frequent reader of poetry collections), I also didn't like some, as to be expected with any collection.My favorite poem was Broken Ocean.But then the water grows dark and recedesI guess it is self-protectionTo imagine the part where the water grows dark and recedesI guessI need a jumping-off point to this imageLove is the jumping-off point to this imageBut love isn't even the waterReal love is the lightDon't you know that yet?The water is something elseAs anything that grows dark and recedesIs something else not loveFine then I don't want loveFine then I don't want loveI want the waterI also really enjoyed the poem Litter where Broder compares feelings to dogs that you can either tend to or ignore as they feed themselves. She returns to the idea of feelings being dogs a few more times, making those poems hit harder than they would have otherwise.

Broder is a profoundly good poet able to write in a manner that’s immediately accessible, endearing and off-putting as well as familiar and bizarre.

Poetry is all about words from emotions...raw and uncensored, touching on all subjects and feelings. It doesn't need to be pretty or refined, it just needs to move you. Last Sext is an outstanding collection of pure poetry that does this. Some of it makes sense, some of it doesn't...but all of it is written with passion and absolute skill.
