Had problems with a walmart brand clay and it cracked as it dried certain parts is this the same?

Yes it's the same. Yoy made to big of a piece and let it dry too quick. Most clay will do that. (Outside of real ceramic clay.) Losses wrap in plastic wrap while drying. Repair cracks with dried clay mixed with water and left to soak (slip) and a fresh piece of fresh clay

Will this clay work for a school project for students to make a Mayan style pyramid?

I don't see why not - the clay is very easy to work with. Word of caution - it is VERY messy, so if they are younger kids - that's something to keep in mind: that's the nature of clay. It does also smell very strongly (of clay), so the scent will linger for a while. But other than that - there's a lot of clay, it's easy to mold, very easy to paint adter its dry, and the price is not bad.

Do you have to wet the clay and stuff, or is this like play dough kids clay?

This NOT like play dough which has a bit of elasticity to it. It is an already dampened clay that must be kept sealed in the bag to retain its moisture. While working on your piece you can periodically dip your fingers in water to make it more pliable. Regardless of what you make, the piece HAS to be sealed after drying or it will crumble

can you paint this clay?

Yes. After you create your Sculpture and let it dry completely, you can paint it with acrylic paint. Or whatever your preferred medium paint.
