Q: Product has two jack plugs but laptop only has one socket for headphones. How do I connect both headphones and microphone to my laptop?

Hi, yes it would have been good for that to be in the description that it is two leads. Most laptops only have one socket for headphones. You will need a connector. I'm getting a spare and seen on amazon 3.5mm Audio Jack to Headphone and Microphone U Splitter Converter adapter. Hope this helps.

It has an inline volume control but no mute

Q: Why does this have 2 x stereo jack plugs?..is this not compatible for a smart phone?

The green jack plug goes into the headphones socket & the pink jack plug into the microphone socket on the back of a desktop PC. That's what I wanted it for, I have no idea idea if it is compatible with a smart phone. Sorry.
