The Legend Of Lylah Clare

Here's the movie that's so campy it makes Showgirls look like straightforward drama. Everything about Lylah Clare is awful and immensely entertaining. Kim Novak's performance is absurd - there's no other word for it. Going from zero to zany in six seconds flat, Novak embodies the ghost of Lylah, who apparently was a muppet show-style parody of Marlene Deitrich (only with a variable Swedish/Italian accent dubbed over by a horrendous voice actor!). The flashbacks of Lylah's demise are cause for laughter, with bizarre distorted audio, trippy psychedelic visual effects,and Ms. Novak's dim-witted, gaping gob planted in the corner, vaguely staring into space.The plotting is ridiculous - Lylah was a popular actress who died young, her doppelgänger shows up to take her place and is seemingly possessed by Lylah to such a degree that they wind up dying more or less the same way. But don't even get me started on how delightfully over the top and bizarre the doppelgänger's death scene is. It's enough to make you laugh so hard you might vomit. The sad clowns! Oh dear.Anyway, Lylah's husband (Peter Finch, playing the role so catty and flamboyant that it makes his actually-gay character from Sunday Bloody Sunday look straight by comparison) is a faded film director who decides to make a comeback by hiring the lookalike, Elsa, to star in a movie detailing Lylah's life story. Only problem is that Lylah was so imperfect that the story of the film is almost fictional. Wouldn't want to mention the lesbianism, the drugs, etc. after all. Conveniently, since Lylah and Finch were married, that means that the movie we are watching gets to repurpose the obvious soundstage set of their house as a soundstage set within the film itself (just set up a light rig in the corner and we can say we're ont he backlot now!). It also gives them an excuse to show us the soundstage they're filming on and the crew working there and claim it's all for the movie within the movie. In reality, it's just the cheapest thing you've ever seen done.The whole thing inexorably snowballs into a larger and larger disaster as the acting gets hammier, the directing gets weirder, and the script gets shredded amidst Ms. Novak's Tazmanian-devil style scene chewing. This is one of the dirt worst movies to ever come out of Hollywood, but it's also a true gem for anyone of the MST3K persuasion. Bring your friends over, put this on, and let the jokes fly!

Thoroughly strange send-up (?) satire (?) of old Hollywood and its' denizens in the movie industry. Kim Novak was a trifle too old to play the unknown "ingenue" who is made over and virtually brainwashed to play the lead in a big Hollywood biopic about a dead movie star, Lylah Clare. Everyone wants a piece of the pie and Novak. Trashy and exploitive do not begin to describe this awful over-indulgence in sleaze. Hard to believe Robert Aldrich directed this cheap pic. Terrible waste of Novak and all involved. The disc is fine but the movie isn't. But to each their own.

I love Kim Novak! I think she is arguably one of Hollywood's sexiest actresses. I love Kim Novak movies. She may not be a Merle Streep; but I like her as an actress.Less arguably are the talents of Robert Aldrich, the director. These two together, plus other talented cast members, provided me with an 'edge-of-my-seat' story of what goes on behind the scenes in 1960's Hollywood. Whether movies, television or the Kardashian family, there is LOTS of drama behind the scenes! I enjoy the behind-the-scenes stories (on today's DVDs and the "scandal rags") as much as the productions themselves ... and sometimes, moreso! This movie provides both; since it is an entertaining MOVIE about what goes on BEHIND THE SCENES. So, I got two for the price of one.Also, I believe the story this movie tells is as appropriate to today's entertainment fields as it was when it was made.

The plot and characters in this film are underdeveloped and boring. Novak doesn't want to be there and it shows... The story could be considered a thematic counterpoint to Hitchcock's 'Vertigo' but not in a clever or entertaining way. It's hard to believe this is was the same director that made 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane'.Overall, this is an example of old Hollywood trying to be 1960s hip, but the effort is too timid and self-conscious. As a worthwhile alternative, may I suggest 'Myra Breckenridge' instead.

I love this film for all of the wrong reasons. The best way to describe it is "pure camp." This movie is touted on cable channels as a "guilty pleasure," and that it is. I may be wrong, but I doubt anyone involved with the making of this 1968 film had any idea of the mess they were making. It is supposed to be a thriller that goes nowhere, but that does not matter. I have such a good time watching Kim Novak in that stiff wig they saddled her with that I kind of feel sorry for her. I'm glad she redeemed herself in most of her other movies. If you appreciate camp, this is one to rent.  The Legend Of Lylah Clare

A MAD ALDRICH TAKE ON HOLLYWOOD. FINCH, AS WAYS, IS TOO OVER THE TOP. BUT CORAL BROWN AND VALENTINA CORTESE MAKE IT FUN. NOVAK IS INTERESTING AS THE ALMOST HYPNOTIZED CENTRAL CHARACTER.

Dear Kim Novak. She has always been greatly underrated. Other than Vertigo, not many folks can name anyoutstanding roles she has played. In this film, she not only is hired to take the place of a famous star who killedherself, but Kim actually becomes the dead star, and can speak in a guteral German in a horse voice the same waythe former star did. If you like Kim Novak - This is the film for you to see.

Kim Novack tears up the scenery as her bookish actress takes on the characteristics of legendary Screen Siren Lylah Clare. A Camp classic of old time Hollywood and it's scandals.Not everyone's cup of tea but if you love films like Valley of the Dolls, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and their ilk it's a must have for your collection. I'm so pleased it's been made available as a MOD title. I've been looking for it for years.

I LIKE KIM NOVAK AND THIS IS A NICE ONE TO HAVE IN MY COLLECTION HOPEFULLY YOURS IF YOU ARE A FAN

Ein Jahr nach Valley of the Dolls und ein Jahr vor The Big Cube hatte Kim Novak ihr ganz persönliches Boom in Form dieses grellen Schmachtfetzens unter der Ägide von Star-Regisseur Robert Aldrich. Nun muss man Aldrich attestieren, dass unter den rund 30 Filmen, die er zu verantworten hatte, kein einziger war, der nicht zumindest einen hohen Unterhaltungswert hatte, und »The Legend of Lylah Clare« bildet da keine Ausnahme. Der Film reiht sich nahtlos in die Reihe der camp classics aus jenen Jahren ein. Wie Aldrichs eigenes Meisterwerk What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? oder die einige Jahre später entstandenen Klassiker »Mommie Dearest« (Regie: Frank Perry) und »The Lonely Lady« (Regie: Peter Sasdy) handelt es sich bei »Lylah Clare« um eine schonungslose Abrechnung mit der Traumfabrik Hollywood, um das Scheinweltfieber und die Schattenseiten des Ruhms: Kim Novak »spielt« eine Schauspielerin, die eine mysteriös verstorbene Schauspielerin spielen soll. Das ist quasi schon auf drei Ebenen absurd — von den Haarteilen, die Novak in ihrer Doppelrolle trägt, will ich gar nicht erst anfangen! —, fasst den Film in seiner Essenz allerdings ganz gut zusammen.Aber der Reihe nach: Elsa Brinkmann (Novak) ist eine unbekannte Schauspielerin, die es sich in den Kopf gesetzt hat, Karriere in Hollywood zu machen. Während des Titelvorspanns spaziert Elsa/Kim über den Walk of Fame und bewundert die Sterne von Jean Harlow und Marilyn Monroe. Elsa hat Glück, dass ein einflussreicher Agent (Selzer) sie unter seine Fittiche nimmt und sie dem ehemals äußerst erfolgreichen Regisseur Lewis Zarken (Finch) vorstellt, der seit dem Tod seiner Muse (und Ehefrau) Lylah Clare (ebenfalls Novak) vor 20 Jahren keinen Film mehr gemacht hat und nun, geblendet von Elsas Ähnlichkeit mit der Verstorbenen, ein Biopic über Lylahs Aufstieg und Fall mit Elsa in der Hauptrolle plant. Lylah war die Königin Hollywoods gewesen, eine Mischung aus Dietrich und Garbo, und seinerzeit in einem Berliner Bordell »entdeckt« und in die Traumfabrik entführt worden. Dass Kim Novak in ihren Szenen als Lylah Clare eine merkwürdig tiefe Stimme und einen starken deutschen Akzent hat, ist übrigens nicht ihren stimmlichen Talenten geschuldet, sondern Inga Busch, die sie in diesen Passagen synchronisierte. (Busch synchronisierte Jahre später auch Hildegard Knef in »Fedora« (Regie: Billy Wilder), weshalb Novak bis heute behauptet, dass die Knef sie in »Lylah Clare« synchronisiert hätte, was leider nicht den Tatsachen entspricht, obwohl man es szenenweise wirklich glauben mag.)»The Legend of Lylah Clare« klaut ziemlich frech bei Hitchcocks Rebecca und bei »Sunset Boulevard« (Regie: Billy Wilder). Zarkens Anwesen gleicht einem Lylah-Tempel, an allen Wänden hängen Gemälde von seinem Star, und es gibt auch eine lesbische Schauspiellehrerin aus Italien (hervorragend gespielt von Rossella Falk), die ihre Herrin schmerzlich vermisst und die Entwicklungen mit Zarkens Neuentdeckung argwöhnisch beobachtet. Sie ist wie Mrs. Danvers, nur in besserer Garderobe. Natürlich beginnt Zarken eine Affäre mit Elsa, die im Prozess der Vorbereitungen zu ihrem Filmdebüt mehr und mehr mit der kaltherzigen, dauerläufigen Lylah verschmilzt, was — wir erinnern uns an Vertigo — nicht gut ausgehen kann. Oder? Und bevor Elsa/Kim am Ende vor laufenden Kameras ein ähnliches Ende findet wie Kim/Lylah, lüftet Aldrich das dunkle Geheimnis der durchtriebenen Lylah Clare: Die war nämlich lesbisch und hatte Höhenangst. Ja, Vertigo ließ die Novak nie ganz los.Auch ohne Kim Novak in der Hauptrolle hätte »Lylah Clare« es schwer gehabt. Das krankhaft überladene Drehbuch fußte auf einem TV-Film mit Tuesday Weld aus dem Jahre 1963 und muss anno dazumal schon schrecklich veraltet gewirkt haben. Hollywood Gothic war in den späten Sechzigern eigentlich ein Relikt aus der Vergangenheit. Trotzdem hätte Aldrich ohne Kim Novak einen passablen Film daraus machen können. Er versuchte zuerst Jeanne Moreau, dann Diana Dors für den Part zu gewinnen; beide mussten aus Termingründen absagen. Dann schlug das Studio Ursula Andress (!) und Kim Novak vor. Die Novak hatte nach einem Reitunfall während der Dreharbeiten zu Eye of the Devil 1965 nicht mehr gedreht und sich weitgehend aus dem Filmgeschäft zurückgezogen, nachdem ihr Haus in Los Angeles abgebrannt war. Laut Aldrich war sie nicht besonders enthusiastisch und nur schwer zu motivieren. »Lylah Clare« wurde Novaks letzte Hauptrolle in einem US-amerikanischen Kinofilm. In den Folgejahren trat sie noch sporadisch im Fernsehen auf oder war in marginalen europäischen Produktionen wie »Just a Gigolo« (Regie: David Hemmings) oder »The Children« (Regie: Tony Palmer) zu sehen.Die »Los Angeles Times« formulierte ihre Kritik an Novaks Scheitern in diesem Film sehr milde, indem sie betonte, dass die Rolle so komplex und schwierig war, dass auch »Sarah Bernhardt in ihrer besten Zeit überfordert gewesen wäre«. Der Fairness halber sollte erwähnt werden, dass sowohl Peter Finch als auch Ernest Borgnine (als schmieriger Filmmogul) sich hier schauspielerisch nicht gerade mit Ruhm bekleckern. Gut sind einzig die italienischen Stars, die Aldrich engagiert hatte: Rosella Falk, Gabriele Tinti (als sexy Gärtner) und Valentina Cortese (als Modedesignerin) geben tolle Vorstellungen. In zum Teil winzigen Nebenrollen sind Coral Browne (als Klatschkolumnistin), Lee Meriwether (als als Kerl verkleidete lesbische Gespielin von Lylah), Ellen Corby, George Kennedy und Dick Miller mit von der Partie.Die Dreharbeiten zu »Lylah Clare« erstreckten sich vom 12. Juli bis zum 16. November 1967. Dass Robert Aldrich diesen Film und seinen (ungleich besseren) Nachfolger »The Killing of Sister George« (1968) produzieren konnte, war dem großen Erfolg von »The Dirty Dozen« (1967) zu verdanken, der einen Umsatz von 45 Millionen US-Dollar und vier Oscarnominierungen eingefahren hatte. Nach vernichtenden Kritiken wurde »Lylah Clare« auch noch finanziell zu einem satten Minusgeschäft, das Werk erreichte jedoch im Lauf der Jahre eine Art Kultstatus.

This movie has the absolutely *Stunningly Beautiful*>>***KIM NOVACK*** in it, that was enough for me...I have been trying to collect her movies for some time and lo & behold, I found some here on Amazon...I also ordered *Pal Joey* and *Bell, Book and Candle*, all of which by the way are great movies,, and they all have the *Glamorous Kim Novack* in them...That in itself is worth buying them...Prices were great, service was as always "prompt, speedy and courteous...I am still waiting to receive *Pal Joey* but I'm sure it will be along soon...I can't say enough about Miss Novack and her movies other than to tell you, do yourself a favor and buy them...Thanks Amazon...

Did not enjoy this movie. The plotline was too boring.
