4-5 grams of magnesium in each bag according to the description, which is enough to start about 3 fires per bag.

Should gloves be used when handling this material? Looks like it can easily cut or become embedded in your skin.

No gloves needed. The tiny pieces are not really that sharp. The material is so light weight it requires negligible pressure from your fingers to handle it. It doesn't stick to your fingers any more than damp sand. Its not toxic either. I usually don't handle it much anyway, just dump a small portion onto a surface and push it into a neat pile with my knife. Magnesium is softer than steel and doesn't form very sharp edges like steel when it it shaved into these small pieces. I've found i really only use it in the very wettest conditions anyway to help dry out damp tinder.
