How are these semi-open? Do they have open-backs somehow? How can that be when they have noise cancellation?

The Philips SH402 has ported drivers that vent to the air via a small hole. Open-back headphones isolate more and leak less. Whereas, closed-back headphones isolate less and leak more. Semi-open headphones are a hybrid of the two, capturing the best features of both open- and closed-back headphones. Regarding noise-cancelation, the small holes allow the semi-open headphones to block a moderate amount of environmental/ambient noise and provide an excellent combination of bass and a large size sound stage. In comparison, open-back allows for a bigger soundstage, more air, and more instrument separation, while closed-back is better for bass only.
