The hangers are covered in a whitish/grey residue and they smell. Is this if any concern?

I'm on my second batch of these as think they're really good for money - both batches are totally black with no residue or smell - I would be wary, quarantine and send yours back

Can I use them in electric clothes airer? Will they withstand the heat inside a covered airer?

No they are plastic So I wouldn't use them.

Do they have a gripping material finish or will trousers slide off them?

The ones we have do not have any gripping feature. Personally, I think they are not strong enough for jeans or heavy trousers. They are lightweight and perfect for shirts and blouses especially when we have a dozen hanging on a rail.
