Excellent History of Germany
This book covers: 1) The Weimar Republic, a democracy that failed in the face of huge reparations obligations, hyper inflation in 1923, and the non-support of elites, mainly the land-owning Juncker class. 2) The rise of Hitler and the Nazis with their takeover in 1933. 3) The war, the Holocaust, and the post-war division of Germany. 4) Politics in the two Germanys, the East German revolution in 1989 and subsequent reunification. 5) Politics in the reunited Germany. Thoroughly researched. The author displays a wealth of knowledge and insightful analysis. It’s mainly a middle level history with not so much about top level personalities (Hitler of course is the exception) or mass level common people (the Holocaust is the exception here). Some occasional illustrative anecdotes would be welcome and would improve readability.

I haven’t read the book yet. I’m sure it’s excellent. I bought this thinking it was the fourth edition as shown on the cover of the book. The first words of the book are “Preface to Second Edition”. So it’s actually Edition 2 not a fourth edition
