Rediscover Your SELF Everyday
I purchased this book to supplement my MA library in the hope that whenever I'm stuck in a mental rut, bored or lacking motivation, Bruce Lee's words would help to illuminate the (possible) cause of the impasse and show me the way back to my own center. This book covers a number of different areas of life and awareness and if you were to breeze through it in a store, you may be tempted to blow it off as a collection of 'fortune cookie' answers to questions you haven't bothered to ask yourself. I felt this way when I skimmed through it in a local store. Still mildly interested, I thought about what I had read and returned to Amazon to read the available excerpts and then ordered this book. In the week that passed, I had unearthed some issues that were inhibiting my training both in and out of the dojo and was at a loss for a complete solution. Thanks to Bruce Lee's insights, I saw these knots from a different perspective -sometimes slightly different, sometimes in glaring contrast to what I had wrongly assumed is more or less true at all times -the latter being an indicator of a stale mind and spirit. Budo (whatever form or style) is a means to train the body to respond efficiently and economically. What is often forgotten is that in the beginning (of training), we pay a great deal of attention to the manner in which our mind, thoughts, feelings and body respond -singularly and/or as a whole. As skill improves, this awareness and interest wanes in favor of attention to being as good as or better than our peers -as a result, the wholeness experienced in the early days of training takes a backseat and due to neglect, creates that nagging sense that 'something ain't right'. That 'something' is malnutrition and poor diet -a condition of the mind and spirit as well as the body. In the 30 minute bus ride to my dojo, reading Bruce Lee's view on Pre-conditioning of the individual by society -at present and throughout history -along with a couple of statements on attention and awareness -filled in the gaps and corrected errors in my own thought processes. Once in the dojo (and during quiet time before training), I decided to apply what I had read. The brain fog cleared quickly and training became a 'whole' experience again. This alone is worth more than the cost of the book. While the entries are brief, the effect is like eating a power bar - just enough when you need it. The contents are arranged according to areas addressed and the viewpoints are short and to the point. To make a short story long ("too late", I know), this is a good book to have around -especially when you need a 'thought for the day' and a great supplement toward a well rounded MA library in order to continue as a whole person on the complex path of budo.

I was going to read this book more fully but.....
So I was looking to get some uplifting, motivational kick in the pants to further get my act together and I came across this book. So in the title above I was going to read the wisdom of the Dragon himself until I unintentionally ended up on the index section of the book and found quote that stuck out to me. "Forget about your feelings and become one with the work" that message was so powerful I....sorta forgot about reading the rest of the book and immediately went into beast mode on my studies. As a result of reading that statement I have nearly finished 3 online courses, came up with 2 to 4 new story concepts, knocked out some soldering training, and rapidly approaching new programming courses. So now I need to work on my sleeping pattern...so yeah....buy this book!!!

A guidebook to life’s simple truths
As much as I would have loved taking martial arts training from Bruce, I would have equally enjoyed just talking with him on various topics. Very enlightening and motivating! As easy to read book with many brief statements/expressions that challenge you to make your own path; deal with life on it’s own terms. The book binding, paper, and print are excellent , only adding to the pleasure of reading Bruce Lee’s thoughts.

If you're looking for a book about martial arts then look somewhere else - this is a collection of short, philosophical statements that take up on basically all aspects of life. As I am doing martial arts myself, I was looking for something to make me understand the psychological aspects of being a fighter and a down-to-earth explanation of the basics of philosophies of the Far East and how I am influenced by them in my daily life. This is exactly what I was looking for. Though sometimes it feels like a schoolbook, the vocabulary is at times difficult and you have to really think about each sentence, you can't help but smile when Bruce Lee's spirit shines through the pages and you find yourself reading the chapters in his voice. I'm reading it for the second time already.

The book is amazing! At first I will admit that I didn't understand a lot of it, especially the description of voids, the Zen, Tao and so on. So I kind of skimmed over a lot of it, but I'm getting into my second read. Of course he does mention at the start to 'empty your cup' so you can taste his cup of tea, admittedly it took me a while to taste it because I didn't know if I was tasting tea or coffee?! All metaphorically of course, but once understood and getting yourself into that state of mind you can truly appreciate his teachings. I've learnt more about myself than ever before as he said "All types of knowledge ultimately means self-knowledge" and I couldn't explain it in this review to help you understand what that means, you have to read the book. It's like an inside joke that you have to be 'there' to understand it. Not only that but I'm a much happier person for it, having no idea that I knew nothing about myself and thinking 'well I am me, so what is there I don't know'? Bruce makes you question yourself and asks you certain things you never thought of before. My review being long enough already I'm not going to quote his quotes, but all I can say is if you see Bruce Lee as a somewhat 'idol' in whatever form then you should definitely read his philosophical teachings. Also when I first bought the book I thought the writing was going to be straight forward like any other book but it's actually written down in direct quotes, to which he takes you on different steps towards learning yourself and everything around you.

Ordered "Striking Thoughts" from Amazon, got it quickly at a great price. Finally having it in hand brought me joy—it's the book I've been searching for. Bruce Lee's insights are profound and practical, inspiring me to live better every day. A must-have for anyone seeking wisdom and personal growth. Highly recommend it!
