## Description

Hancock turns the standard superhero movie inside-out: The title character (Will Smith) can fly, has superstrength, and is invulnerable, but he's also a sloppy, alcoholic jerk who causes millions of dollars in property damage whenever he bothers to fight crime. When he saves the life of a public-relations agent named Ray (Jason Bateman, Arrested Development ), Ray decides to improve Hancock's image--starting by having Hancock surrender himself to the authorities and go to prison for his lawless behavior. The idea is that once he's in prison, the crime rate will go up, and people will start to realize Hancock might be of value after all. This is only the first act of Hancock --from there, the movie takes several clever turns that shouldn't be revealed. Hancock isn't a great movie (among other things, director Peter Berg overuses close-ups with a hand-held camera to a degree that may cause motion sickness), but it is an extremely entertaining one. The script, which holds together far better than most superhero movies, has a propulsive plot, good dialogue, some compassion for its characters, and even an actual idea or two. The spectacular action at least gestures towards obeying the laws of physics, which actually makes the special effects more vivid. The three leads (Smith, Bateman, and Charlize Theron as Ray's wife, Mary) deftly balance the movie's mixture of comedy, action, and drama. All in all, a smart subversive twist on a genre that all too often takes itself all too seriously. -- Bret Fetzer Academy Award nominee Will Smith (Best Actor, The Pursuit of Happyness, 2006) stars in this action-packed comedy as Hancock, a sarcastic, hard-living and misunderstood superhero who has fallen out of favor with the public.

Review: Best Superhero Movie I've Seen in Years! - After reading some of the other reviews, I had to add in my own two cents. I watch a lot of movies. Been watching them since I was a kid. I love superhero movies, collected every comic from Spiderman, to Superman, and Spawn. But the things this movie has over all of those, is originality, good humor, and a touching story. Marvel fans may be upset that there is no cliche Stan Lee-esque radioactivity accident, or nearly Omnipotent "last son" of a dying advanced alien civilization. Somebody didn't accidentally fall into a bunch of strange chemicals and develop super abilities. It's very possible that what made many comic book fans not like it is simply that there is no "I can be a superhero too factor" for all those nerds out there fantasizing that they can one day stumble upon a magic ring or secret experiment that will make them gods. So as not to ruin the plot for you, I'll say simply that it's a fairly original idea, and I loved it. It's even traumatic in a way and adds a certain amount of emotion to the film. All the characters were very well written and acted, and I don't understand why anyone - comic book fan or otherwise - would have a problem with it. We need more ideas for superheros, or they're all just the same. To keep this short, I'll say this. Rent it, buy it, stream it from desertcart or netflix, or buy the dvd or bluray. Don't ever take the word of a few individuals online. Some of the best movies I've ever seen were given bad ratings by bloated, under-educated people that just don't want to think during a movie. You know what opinions are like. And everyone has one. Just because a few people didn't like a movie doesn't mean it's bad. It just means that it wasn't for those few people. For that matter, don't take my word for it either. Think for yourself, but definitely give this movie a chance. You'll be glad you did. P.S. The unrated version is way better FYI.
Review: Rating based of Context that is easily forgotten. - Compared to the DC and Marvel this seems lack luster, at the same time it was made as a comedic super hero parody. Marvel Studio's line starting at 2008 with Iron Man to start off The Avengers line, the previous films were all licensed through other production studios. DC Comics has an equally mixed line of production over the years, until 2005 with Batman Begins, DC was not directly involved, just permission purchases by other production companies. Hancock along with many other alternate or non-core cannon Marvel Universe movies were handled by Columbia Pictures. The X-men series were primarily handled through 20th Century Fox, just to cover all bases. That tidbit out of the way... I felt this movie was really well done, Will Smith's acting did not disappoint, the continued comedic effect was there with an underlying heavier tone that comes out over time. I would definitely define this as an Origin movie for Hancock, while no additional movies were made, had not been for the sweeping nature of The Avengers and their associated individual Hero movies, there may have very well been a Hancock 2. This was satisfying to watch in 2019 (finally) as it fell under the Radar for me when it was released for various personal reasons. I was in my 20's when Han cock released and Will Smith being an iconic actor in my childhood and young adulthood. Rating Hancock for what it is, not what it isn't, I give it a 5-star rating.
